Serendipity and the Sparkling Truth

Serendipity Winery is located in the heart of the Naramata Bench in the Okanagan Valley and is owned by Judy Kingston and assisted by her second-in-command Katie O’Kell and winemaker Bradley Cooper.

The adventure began in the fall of 2005 when Judy embarked on a holiday wine tour of the Okanagan with a view to finding a retirement property in the South Okanagan. Instead, she found an old orchard in Naramata. This was the first Serendipity “aha” moment, as she set out to convert the orchard to a vineyard and establish a new boutique winery.

Vineyard

Beginning in the spring of 2006, the property was completely re-landscaped to provide the optimum slope and orientation for the new vineyard. The wine varietals were selected and planted to match the micro climate and four distinct soil types on the property.  In 2007, eight acres of vines were planted consisting of Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc as the main reds, and Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc as the whites. Plantings of Syrah, Pinot Noir and Malbec were added shortly later.

The first harvest in 2009 was of exceptional quality. It was a tribute to the many hours of hard work and dedication that was put into the vineyard. To add complexity and diversity to the wines, additional grapes have been purchased from local Okanagan growers who share the same commitment to quality. In 2013 the winery was named BC Winery of the Year at the New York International Wine Competition.  Serendipity is current building a new wine tasting room.

Winemaker

The winemaker at Serendipity is the “larger than life” Bradley Cooper.  Our politics may differ but I sure do love his BC Wines. Bradley joined Serendipity in 2014, with a vision to take this small, 3,500 case winery to triple the size over the next three years.  These links will take you to Bradley’s general comments on the 2015 and 2016 Vintages.

The Wines

Serendipity Sparkling Truth 2014  This Blanc de Blanc is a first for Serendipity, made in the traditional method from 100% Chardonnay grapes. A clean, floral nose, and crisp minerality with balanced acidity, this elegant BC bubble offers flavours of granny smith apple, almond/marzipan, creamy lemon tart, sweet pastry, mandarin and pear. It offers a luscious mousse with an elegant mouthfeel and generous length.  A truly elegant sparkler!

Serendipity Viognier 2015  Traditional Viognier notes of lemon, honey and tropical fruits greet your nose. The acid balance brings out a taste of lemon, orange, peach and kiwi, with flavours of gooseberry and creamy lemon tart. Great length and a clean finish.

Serendipity Reserve Serenata 2012 A well-integrated wine with a long finish. This is a blend of three Bordeaux grapes – Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The nose has hints of fresh & dried raspberries, cherries, blueberries, and hints of exotic tea. Filling your mouth are flavours of chocolate, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, and sweet spice. This is a big wine made to cellar and can be enjoyed starting in late 2017. Decanting the wine before drinking will add to your pleasure.
