The Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, Canada, is known for producing exceptional red wines. Here is a summary of some of the best Okanagan red wines:

  1. Burrowing Owl Estate Winery Syrah: This award-winning wine is renowned for its rich and complex flavours of dark fruit, pepper, and smoky oak. It has a full body and a long finish, and pairs well with grilled meats and hearty stews.
  2. Black Hills Estate Winery – Nota Bene remains one of the Okanagan’s most iconic red blends, crafted entirely from estate-grown Bordeaux varietals on the Black Sage Bench. With its bold structure, layered complexity, and age-worthy finesse, Nota Bene continues to set the benchmark for premium BC reds.
  3. Laughing Stock Vineyards Portfolio: The Laughing Stock Vineyards Portfolio is a Bordeaux-style blend that combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. It has flavours of black cherry, cassis, and vanilla, with a long and velvety finish.
  4. Mission Hill Family Estate Oculus: The Mission Hill Family Estate Oculus is a Bordeaux-style blend that combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. It has flavours of dark fruit, chocolate, and espresso, with a velvety texture and a long finish.
  5. Painted Rock Estate Winery Red Icon: This Bordeaux-style blend combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. It has flavours of black cherry, cassis, and vanilla, with firm tannins and a long finish.
  6. Martin’s Lane Dehart Vineyard Pinot Noir: Vinified in their amazing gravity-only winery to minimize disturbance of the delicate juice. Intoxicating nose of pine resin, black plum, black raspberry, ripe strawberry and allspice. The palate is medium-full, luscious, medium-plus acid, and fine tannin. It’s pricey but pushing the bar.
  7. Osoyoos Larose Le Grand Vin: This Bordeaux-style blend is one of the most expensive wines from the Okanagan Valley. Deep, dark ruby in the glass. Cedar and earthy in the nose. Blackberry, plum, blueberry, earthy, leather, black licorice and black currant on the palate. A lot of tannins. Its sister label, Pétales d’Osoyoos, also deserves a shout-out—offering impressive depth and character at a more accessible price point, making it a standout in its own right.
  8. Le Vieux Pin Équinoxe Syrah: A complex wine with a medium+ garnet colour that effortlessly combines old-world and new-world styles. Full-bodied and fruit-forward, a cousin of the Aussie Shiraz I love from Rockford in the Barossa Valley. Full-on aromas of floral violets, spice, black cherry and plum. Flavours of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, black cherries and smoked meat with black and white pepper notes.  Smooth tannins and a long finish.
  9. Hester Creek Garland: The Cabinet Sauvignon dominant Garland can cellar for 8+ years. Elegant, intense, muscular and full of dark fruit drama and luscious on the palate with black currant, dark plums, blueberry with mint and savoury herbs. The tannins are ripe and smooth, and the finish goes on forever! The EPIC ’22 vintage of Garland and The Judge is exceptional.
  10. Ex Nihilo Night & Midnight – Crafted from premium grapes sourced from the Black Sage and Golden Mile Benches, these Bordeaux-inspired blends showcase the artistry of winemaker Jim Faulkner. Night delivers a refined medley of black fruit, cassis, and subtle tobacco on the nose, unfolding into layers of black cherry, plum, fig, and dark chocolate on the palate. Midnight, aged 32 months in oak, offers deeper intensity with lush Italian plums, ripe figs, and sticky dates wrapped in velvety tannins. Both wines display impeccable balance, elegant structure, and a luxuriously smooth, lingering finish.
  11. La Stella ‘Maestoso’ Merlot: Bursting with bright cherry-candy fruit. Stiff at first, it smoothes beautifully with substantial breathing time, showing polish and purity. The overall balance and flavour intensity propel it to a high level.
  12. River Stone Corner Stone: The River Rock vineyard was planted with this wine in mind. Corner Stone is the winery’s signature wine, a classic Bordeaux-style blend aged for over 18 months in French oak. Vibrant black cherry and blackberry aromas. This is a bold, full-bodied red with fruit-driven flavours of black plum, dark chocolate, coffee, tobacco and a hint of smoke and savoury spices. The smooth, ripe tannins are well-rounded, and the finish is long.
  13. Culmina Hypothesis: A refined Bordeaux-style blend from the Golden Mile Bench, showing aromas of black cherry, cedar, and wild sage with a touch of menthol. The palate is rich and harmonious, layered with cassis, dark chocolate, and warm spice. Silky tannins and subtle minerality lead to a long, elegant finish.
  14. Vasanti Canvas: 50/50 Syrah / Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Deeply coloured and intensely aromatic, it bursts with black plum, black cherry, menthol, vanilla and cedar. The palate is full-bodied and complex, layered with ripe black fruit, pepper, dark chocolate and a touch of saline minerality. Rich, structured, and long on the finish.
  15. Hester Creek GSM: The GSM is a deep, ruby-red colour. It has a graceful aroma of plum, cherries, and chocolate. Elegantly and perfectly balanced, the medium-bodied wine reveals layers of ripe raspberry, plum, and cherry flavours with fine tannins, floral notes, and a hint of pepper.
