Alves de Sousa Vintage Port 2015 🇵🇹🍷at @docdouro Alves de Sousa Vintage Port 2015 🇵🇹🍷at @docdouro
A memorable taste of the Douro Valley. Rich layers of blackberry, plum, dark chocolate and spice wrapped in the power and elegance that make Vintage Port so special.
One of those wines that reminds you why Portugal belongs on every wine lover's bucket list.

Sometimes great wines are born from curiosity.

River Stone's first-ever Small Lot Merlot began as an experiment with the saignée method, resulting in just 100 cases. Crafted from estate-grown fruit at the River Rock Vineyard, this limited release spent 24 months in French oak, developing layers of dark fruit, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, and spice.

The result is a rich yet beautifully balanced Merlot with a silky texture and impressive depth. It's a reminder that even in challenging years, innovation can lead to something special.

If you're a fan of premium Okanagan reds, this is a bottle worth seeking out before it disappears.

🍷 Pair with grilled steaks, aged cheeses, or a decadent chocolate dessert.

🍷 @drinkriverstone 2025 Whites: Good Neighbours, G 🍷 @drinkriverstone 2025 Whites: Good Neighbours, Great Results

The 2025 vintage at River Stone comes with an interesting twist. While many BC wineries were fortunate enough to craft their white wines from their own vineyards this year, River Stone's entire lineup of five white wines was produced under its Good Neighbours program, using carefully sourced fruit from Washington State after the devastating 2024 cold event and subsequent vineyard replanting.

The surprise? The wines don't feel like a compromise.

From the vibrant Splash white blend and refreshing Pinot Gris to the expressive Sauvignon Blanc, beautifully textured Chenin Blanc, and small-lot Albariño, the lineup consistently delivers the ripe fruit, balance, and freshness River Stone fans have come to expect.

My personal takeaway is that the Good Neighbours project demonstrates both the resilience of BC wineries and the value of industry collaboration. While these wines may carry Washington fruit in the bottle, the winemaking, style, and vision remain unmistakably River Stone.

The good news? River Stone has replanted much of its vineyard and expects estate production to gradually increase over the coming years. In the meantime, these 2025 whites are a fascinating snapshot of a winery adapting, innovating, and continuing to produce highly enjoyable wines. 🍇

🍷 A Memorable Afternoon at @docdouro 🇵🇹 One of the 🍷 A Memorable Afternoon at @docdouro 🇵🇹
One of the highlights of our Douro Valley visit was exploring a fascinating lineup of wines—and even a sake—while enjoying the spectacular river views at @docdouro.
🥂 @champagnecattier R43 Vintage 2014 – beautifully mature Champagne with layers of brioche, citrus and remarkable finesse.
🍇 @vallepradinhos Reserva Branco 2023 – fresh, vibrant and mineral-driven, showcasing the elegance of Portuguese whites.
🍶 Junmai Ginjo Sake (Hiroshima, Japan) – a real surprise. Silky smooth and incredibly refined, with delicate fruit and floral notes. Unlike many warm sakes people may have experienced, there was absolutely no harsh alcohol burn—just purity, balance and a long, graceful finish.
⭐ @quintadaboavista Vinha do Levante Grande Reserva Branco 2023 – rich, textured and complex while maintaining outstanding freshness. One of the standout white wines of the trip.
🍷 @niepoortwines Charme 2022 – elegant, perfumed and Burgundian in style, demonstrating why Dirk Niepoort is considered one of Portugal's most innovative winemakers.
The Douro is world-famous for Port, but experiences like this remind you that the region's table wines rank among the most exciting in Europe.
Have you discovered a wine—or sake—while travelling that completely exceeded your expectations?

🍷🇵🇹 Portugal Surprise: Pinot Noir from Lisboa Pin 🍷🇵🇹 Portugal Surprise: Pinot Noir from Lisboa

Pinot Noir may be synonymous with Burgundy, but Portugal delivered an unexpected treat with the Casa Romana Vini Página Pinot Noir 2023.

This light ruby-coloured red opens with aromas of ripe red berries and a subtle touch of French oak. On the palate, it's fresh and vibrant, with lively acidity and elegant tannins that make it wonderfully food-friendly.

At just €18.25, it also represents terrific value.

Portugal continues to impress not only with its indigenous varieties but also with wines that showcase international grapes through a uniquely Portuguese lens.

Have you discovered any unexpected wines while travelling? 🍷
