Meyer Family Vineyards 2023 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Background

Meyer Family Vineyards‘ reputation for Burgundy-style wines, specifically Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, can be attributed to several key factors:

  1. Microclimate and Terroir: The Okanagan Falls region benefits from a microclimate well-suited for growing grapes like those in Burgundy. The area’s unique combination of sun exposure, temperature swings, and soil composition contributes significantly to the quality and style of the wines. This microclimate allows for the ripening of grapes like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with the right balance of acidity and fruit expression.
  2. Winemaker Expertise: The winemakers at Meyer Family Vineyards, such as Christopher Carson and Ajay Chavan, bring extensive experience from regions known for producing high-quality wines. Their skills in viticulture and oenology, particularly in crafting small-lot, hand-crafted wines, play a crucial role in achieving the Burgundian style. Their background in places like New Zealand, California, and Montrachet directly influences their approach to winemaking, focusing on the nuances that define Burgundy-style wines.
  3. Marketing: By focusing on small case lots and emphasizing the estate’s dedication to traditional Burgundian methods, Meyer Family Vineyards has positioned itself as a producer of premium, artisanal wines. Their engagement with visitors through tastings and events also helps build brand loyalty and recognition.
  4. Export Expertise: While not as widely exported as some wineries, Meyer Family’s international reputation has been bolstered by critical acclaim and awards. Their focus on quality over quantity resonates with connoisseurs worldwide.

This multifaceted approach places Meyer Family Vineyards among Canada’s premier producers of Burgundy-style wines.

With this background, let us move on to the two 2023 wines. You can find information on the 2023 Harvest in a previous article – Tasting Meyer Gewürztraminer & Pinot Noir 2023.

Meyer Okanagan Valley Chardonnay 2023

The wine is a blend of fruit from three vineyards: our estate-operated vineyard at Old Main Road on the Naramata Bench, Anarchist Mountain Vineyard in Osoyoos, and our home vineyard on McLean Creek Road in Okanagan Falls. The unique terroirs of the three sustainably farmed vineyard sites yield a precise wine with elegance, finesse, and length.

The grapes were gently whole-cluster pressed, and the cold juice settled overnight. It was then racked off its heavy sediment into a combination of older seasoned French oak barrels (50%) and stainless-steel vessels (50%). It went through a cool fermentation using a mix of indigenous and cultured yeast. The wine was left on its fine lees for six months and underwent natural malolactic fermentation.

Alcohol: 13.5%/ pH: 3.53 / TA: 7.2 / RS: <5.0

Delicate aromas of citrus zest and white blossoms greet the nose, setting the stage for a refreshing and elegant experience. On the palate, the wine is light-bodied with a silky, creamy texture that adds a touch of richness. Bright flavours of lemon curd, golden apples, and white peach shine through, complemented by a subtle hint of pineapple and a whisper of stony minerality. Perfectly balanced and beautifully nuanced, this wine is a delight from start to finish. 91 Points

Meyer Okanagan Valley Pinot Noir 2023 ($25.30)

Meyer Okanagan Valley Pinot Noir with Sockeye Salmon

The fruit is sourced from four distinctive vineyards in the Okanagan Valley: Fat Coyote Vineyard in Naramata, Anarchist Mountain Vineyard in Osoyoos, Lakehill Road Vineyard in Kaleden and McLean Creek Road Vineyard in Okanagan Falls and cropped at only 2 tons per acre. The combination of these different vineyards, each with its unique aspect, elevation, and soil, has produced a well-rounded Pinot Noir that showcases the Okanagan Valley.

The fruit was gently de-stemmed via gravity into small open-top fermenters, with 25% whole clusters, and allowed to cold soak. After cold soaking, a mix of cultured and Indigenous ferments began lasting 18-28 days, peaking at 30-33 oC; gentle hand plunging of the must was done throughout. After a post-maceration period, the wine was gently pressed and then spent eight months in 100% older seasoned French oak barrels and puncheons.

Alcohol: 13.5%/ pH: 3.67 / TA: 5.9 / RS: <1.0

This BC Pinot Noir is an exceptional value, offering a delightful expression of the varietal. The nose is alive with vibrant aromas of ripe cherries and raspberries, elegantly intertwined with hints of rose petal and violet. The palate reveals a medium-bodied frame with bright, refreshing acidity. Layers of red cherries, wild strawberries, and subtle notes of leather and forest floor unfold gracefully, leading to a dry, well-balanced finish. The tannins, like liquid velvet, are impeccably smooth, adding to the refined texture of the wine. It’s a standout at this price point. 91 Points.
