Winemaker’s CUT 2021 Releases

The BIG news is that Michal Mosny now has a tasting room to showcase his premium Winemaker’s CUT wines at District Wine Village. The village is now open daily from 10 AM to 7 PM.

The first true wine village in Canada, located in the heart of the South Okanagan. The Village is surrounded by vineyards and home to 16 artisan producers. A four-season opportunity for visitors to meet and enjoy local events and experiences.

We had our first chance to try some of the new Winemaker’s CUT releases during a recent zoom session. Here is the background information and tasting notes for the six new wines.

Winemaker’s CUT Sauvignon Blanc 2020 ($24)

Winemaker’s CUT Sauvignon Blanc 2020 ($24)

Vineyards – 100% Sauvignon Blanc from Estate Vineyard, Deadman Lake Vineyard, Oliver BC. 450 cases produced.
Harvest– hand-harvested 17th and 26th Sept. 2020 at an average of 22.0 Brix, 4 tons per acre
Winemaking – cold-soaked for 1 day, wild and organic yeast fermented for 48 days. 25% Slovakian oak.

Technical Data – 12.0 % Alcohol, 3.27 pH, 7.5 TA, 4.1 RS

Aromas of citrus and tropical fruits. The wine is alive when it reaches your tongue. A very vibrant wine. Flavours of pineapple, kiwi, lemon, key lime and red grapefruit. The wine has a light creamy texture, with minerality and a long finish.

A fruit-forward style wine that is great with seafood or standalone. It was paired with BBQ Pork Tenderloin and was amazing. Enjoy this fabulous BC example of Sauvignon Blanc! 92 Points

Winemaker’s CUT Bohemian Cuvée Blanc 2019 ($28)

Vineyards – Deadman lake vineyard and Chahal vineyard, North of Oliver.

Winemaking – 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Semillon. Cold soaked for 2 days. Wild yeast and co-ferment for 39 days. Aged 6 months in Slovakian oak.

Technical Data – 12.5 % Alcohol, 3.29 pH, 7.5 TA, 1.1 RS , free SO2 16mg/L / total SO2 62 mg/L

Golden straw colour. An exotic tropical fruit aroma of guava, honeydew melon, pineapple, and citrus blossom. The crisp dry palate delivers fruit-forward flavours of Meyer lemon, ripe pineapple with a creamy long finish. Perfectly balanced acidity. 92 Points.

Winemaker’s CUT Fidelia 2020 ($26)

Fidelia is one of the main characters of Puccini Opera Edgar. Fidelia is faithful and loyal, filled with compassion and empathy!

95% Sauvignon Blanc 5% Muscat Canelli. Crushed and pressed with no skin contact. Wild and organic yeast fermentation for 17 days. Secondary fermentation in Charmat tank for 30 days.

Technical Data – 11.5 % Alcohol, 3.0 pH, 7.8 TA, 5 RS.

Pale straw colour. Gentle aromas of apple and white peach. Lots of bubbles when first poured. The palate is dry with well-balanced acidity and a light and refreshing creamy and fruity finish. 90 Points

Vineyards – Estate Vineyard, Deadman Lake Vineyard, Oliver BC.

Varietals – 60% Cabernet Franc, 40% Syrah

Harvest– hand-harvested 2nd Oct. 2020 at average 21 Brix, 3.7 tons per acre

Winemaking – No skin contact. Wild and Organic yeast fermented for 49 days.  100% stainless steel.

Technical Data – 11.5% Alcohol, 3.4 pH, 7.5 TA, 3.6 RS free SO2 18 mg/L / total SO2 48mg/L 

A pale salmon colour. This is a light, easy-drinking Rosé with a higher percentage of Syrah in this vintage. The elegant aromas of stonefruit, cream and strawberries are followed by rich flavours of strawberry, citrus, red berries and grapefruit with a subtle hint of white pepper.  92 Points.

Vineyards – Estate Vineyard, Deadman Lake Vineyard, Oliver BC.

Winemaking – Cold soaked for 2 days, wild/spontaneous stainless steel fermentation.
Free run press and full malolactic fermentation. 6 months in American, French and Slovakian oak.

Technical Data – 13.5% Alcohol, 3.8 pH, 7.1 TA, 1.3L RS, free SO2 14mg/L

A juicy, luscious, full-bodied BC Syrah that is deep garnet in colour.  Decanting is recommended as it will open to beautiful aromas full of black fruit, black licorice, cured meat, and black pepper.

On the palate, the vibrant wine features ripe plum and blackberries, spice, and roasted beets. Medium-full bodied and silky smooth with fine-grained tannins and spicy black fruit persisting on the refreshing finish. This Syrah is ready for long ageing. 92 Points

Winemaker’s CUT Bohemian Cuvée Rouge 2019 ($34)

Winemaker’s CUT Bohemian Cuvée Rouge 2019 ($36)

Vineyards – Deadman Lake vineyard and Chahal vineyard. 40% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% petit verdot. 600 cases produced

Harvest– hand-harvested 19th and 29th Oct. 2019 at average 25 Brix & 4 tons per acre.

Winemaking – cold soaked for 3 days. Wild and co-ferment for 27 days. Full malolactic fermentation. Aged for 6 months in American, French and Slovakian oak.

Technical Data – 13.5 % Alcohol, 3.61 pH, 7.5 TA, 2.9 RS free SO2 12mg/L / total SO2 57mg/L

A gorgeous deep garnet colour opens up a fresh black fruit bouquet infused with hints of pepper, herbs, toasted oak and smoke. Medium-full body wine with higher acidity for ageing. Flavours of blackberry, black cherry, blueberry, leather and espresso linger throughout the finish. 93 points

Conclusion

Winemaker’s CUT has proven again what a fabulous diversity of wines that British Columbia can produce. From aromatic cool-climate whites, easy-drinking sparkling wine to elegant red wines.

  1. What a fantastic addition to the southern Okanagan District Wine Village is, a great place for the 16 current producers! And a nice selection from Winemaker’s Cut, the rosé is especially catching my eye- I drink rosé year long but especially during summer.
