The Vineyard and Winemaking

Doug Wood, Sagewood Estate Winery

My husband, Doug Wood, has propagated the majority of our grape vines himself and all of our vines have been hand-planted.  Along with being our pruner, harvester and vineyard manager, Doug is also our wine-maker.  He has personally hand-tended to each and every grapevine in our vineyard and brings his passion and attention to detail to his winemaking as well.  Doug has planted 17 different grape varieties in our vineyard so this allows us to offer a wide selection of reds, whites, rose’, dessert wines and sparkling wine selections.  100% of our grapes are grown and hand-picked in our vineyard.

We then craft and bottle all of our wines in our on-site winery.  Our two children and I help Doug with harvesting, bottling and labelling.  We have an intimate and welcoming boutique tasting room where Doug and I share our wines and passion with our guests.

Sustainability

Sagewood Vineyard

We are committed to environmentally conscious practices in our vineyard and winery.  We take a whole vineyard/whole winery approach to sustainability. This includes vineyard landscaping, irrigation practices and labour practices.  Our low-impact viticultural practices includes drip-fed irrigation.

We take an organic approach to our vineyard management that includes mulching and composting of our grape skins once harvest and the crush occurs.  Our integrated pest management involves barrier methods such as high-level deer fencing to decrease conflict with our local wildlife (deer, bear, mountain sheep etc). We rely on netting to deter birds in our vineyard.  Our wines are delivered to retail outlets via our electric vehicle.  Doug and I believe that sustainable winegrowing reaches from soil to shelf.
