8 BC Wines for the Holidays

It doesn’t feel like the Holiday Season yet!  The Mountains maybe covered in snow but the pine forest below us is still a sea of green.

This is the time of the year to thank our readers for continuing to read our Blog and the winemakers and their colleague for the material they have supplied again this year for our articles.

During the holiday season, our thoughts turn gratefully to those who have made this year’s success possible.  It is in this spirit that we say THANK YOU and best wishes for the Holidays and New Year.

Now for some excellent BC wines for you to sip while enjoying the Holidays.

Grizzli Winery Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

A medium-bodied wine with aromas of black cherry, dried fig, caramel and spices.  On the palate black cherries, cocoa and now that the wine has aged 24 months from our last tasting, the tannins have mellowed substantially.  The wine received a Gold Medal at the 2018 BC  Best of Varietal Wine Awards.  If you love lamb this wine really goes well with Rosemary Braised Lamb Shanks

Ancient Hill Pinot Noir 2015

Lighter bodied and delicately oaked. Unique to the microclimate of Ancient Hill.  Delicate aromas of violets, red raspberries and savouty cherry, with spicy overtones and well-rounded tannins.  Pinot Noir pairs well with lamb, turkey dinners and soft cheeses.

Sperling Vineyards Natural Amber Pinot Gris 2015

This wine was awarded a gold medal at the Wine Align awards.   The grapes were hand harvested, fermented in small lots – 40% whole clusters and the remainder of the vat filled with stemmed and crushed grapes. Wild yeast and malolactic fermented this wine to complete dryness in 4 weeks.  The wine is pressed and settled and after ageing is bottled with its lees.   Nothing added or taken away.

What appeals to you first is the dark orange colouration.  On the nose hints of earl grey tea, peach pit, deliciously ripe apricot, and apple skin.  Medium bodied with citrus and orchard fruit on the dry but concentrated palate. Fresh acidity carries the grapefruit tinged finish.  We are going to save the Amber Pinot Gris for the Christmas Roast Turkey.

Dirty Laundry Woo Woo Gewürztraminer 2016

Prepare to be wooed by this vivacious Gewürztraminer.  Melon, lychee and rose petals lift the exotic nose, while racy acidity livens the palate, nicely balanced by a sweet-tart finish.  Pair this floral white with Exotic East Indian or Thai curries.

Evolve Pink EFFERVESCENCE NV

50% Pinot Blanc, 30% Merlot and 20% Chardonnay.  Evolve makes this wine by the Charmat Method, like Prosecco.  The base wine is added together with the sugar and yeast mixture into a large tank.  As the wine has a second fermentation, the carbon dioxide released by the fermentation causes the tank to pressurize.  The wine is then filtered, dosed and bottled without ageing.

Pale pink rose petals in colour.  Aromas of ripe red peach and flavours of watermelon, cherry and strawberries.   Sparkling Rose´pairs with just about anything but we especially like this wine with appetizers such as  brie, prosciutto and smoked salmon.

Monte Creek Ranch Winery Rosé 2017

This is a wild yeast fermented Rosé.   The Marquette red wine grape is a new world creation that ripens early and is well suited to cooler climates.  The small berries with pink pulp provide a nice skin-to-juice ratio and a pretty colour.

A deep Day-Glo pink in colour.  Aromas of strawberry, rhubarb, watermelon and caramelized sugar.  The full-body rosé is off-dry on the palate.  In the winter this wine pairs well with seafood such as steamed mussels and baked salmon, just don’t serve the wine as cold as you would in the summer!

Kettle Valley Pinot Noir 2015

This wine is a blend of Pinot Noir grown in the Sartor vineyard in Summerland, and the Cole and Hayman vineyards in Naramata. The wine was allowed to go through a full malolactic fermentation and was barrel fermented in French oak for 18 months before being bottled.

This wine has a lot going for it. Nice colour, excellent lifted nose and great dark cherry fruit, great acid and a medium finish.  Try with sushi and you won’t be disappointed.

Kindle Merlot 2016

It is difficult to believe this $9 Merlot is made from 100% VQA Merlot grapes from the Okanagan Valley.  We have only been able to find this wine at Superstore in Kelowna.  A bold wine at 14.5 % Alcohol.  Mouthwatering aromas of plum and black cherry.  Subtle notes of cocoa, coffee, vanilla with notes of allspice. Smooth, rich palate with a medium finish.   Pairs well with BBQ Hamburgers and Homemade pasta.

One of the Best Value Merlot available in British Columbia, domestic or imported and our quaffing wine for the holiday.
